SPEAKER HIGHLIGHT - Tim Cochran, CPP

The boss is questioning why so many time card errors?  Did he forget that manual time cards for 300 Non Exempt employees is so 1980 !
Finally, he decides it’s time to break out the wallet and purchase that new time and attendance software.  And guess what?  They’ve asked you to be the project manager of this new system implementation.
Of the many hats, you wear, project manager is now one of them (and maybe a little accountant on the side). Learn how to use these new tools to more efficiently track labor and keep compliant with many federal and DOL regulations.
We have the perfect speaker to tackle both of those new ventures:
Join Tim Cochran Thursday, 2:30 pm to learn the best practices for utilizing Time and Attendance software.
And again, on Friday, 10:50 am to discuss the importance of including all elements that must come together for a successful project implementation.
Tim Cochran, CPP is an accomplished Payroll Professional and is actively engaged with the American Payroll Association throughout his payroll career. He has served as the President, Vice President. Secretary and Webmaster of his local chapter in Charlotte. He serves as the Co-Chairperson and Speaker Coordinator of the Carolinas Payroll Conference. He teaches and speaks on various payroll topics.

That Manager is back in your office again, what did he just call you a “Button Pusher?” Do they even know what is involved with processing a payroll and are they aware of the many hats we must juggle daily? And that’s not even mentioning what it’s like on the actual “Transmission Day” !!
Join Jay on Friday (8am-9am) to learn how to juggle these misconceptions by:
  1. Positioning yourself as a strategic leader
  2. Building techniques that foster a team environment
  3. Creative ways to turn your payroll department into a revenue generator
Whether you report into Finance or Human Resources, you have the power to add value to your organization that far exceeds just processing payroll and Jay will be sharing with us how to make these happen.
Jay’s payroll life began after an injury disqualified him from continuing in the US Marine’s Air Wing program and led him to pursue the wonderful world of Payroll and HR.  Now, a corporate HR Manager and serving on the Greater Nashville APA Chapter Board, Jay brings experience and strength building techniques to your department.

Thomas and Company has been a Conference Multi-Year and Website Sponsor since our we began our TN Statewide Payroll Conferences.
John Baumgartner has always given us total support and is on our Executive Director's Board of Advisors.

Thomas & Company has been honored to provide unemployment cost control and employment and wage verification services to industry leaders for the past 21 years. Enclosed is some of the differentiating reasons why our clients continue this partnership.
Thomas & Company's partnership has resulted in significant benefits to our clients, including saving a single retail client $14,253,370 in the first year, improving win percentages from 82% to 96%, and refunding $800,000 due to state errors.
These impressive results are not an accident. They are what happens when the nation’s leading company in unemployment cost control and employment and wage verification forges a strong relationship with the nation’s leading companies in the retail industry.
We excel at what we do because it is all we do and we have been doing it longer than any other company in the United States. Among the benefits that set Thomas & Company apart are:
  • An extremely high level of security: Our SOC2/SOC3 certification is unrivaled within our industry.
  • No third parties: No portion of our unemployment cost control service or our employment & wage
    verification service is outsourced.
  • We do not sell your data: By contrast, the sale of client data is a key profit center for other vendors – which presents obvious security risks. In fact, T&C does not exchange client data with any third party for any reason.
  • We operate from a single location: The centralized nature of our operations greatly diminishes the possibility of security breaches and lapses in quality control, which are more likely to occur when work is spread across many locations and also ensures correct Address of Record on behalf of our clients.
  • You are served by a team of highly experienced professionals: Our clients have a dedicated team of T&C professionals, led by partners with 30 years of experience.
  • We take work off of your in-house HR staff: T&C clients feed us the information and we take it from there, removing a tremendous administrative burden from your staff. By contrast, some vendors push this burden back on the client through a co-managed approach that requires the client to do most of the work of deciphering and managing required documentation.
  • We are proactive: We don’t wait to be told what to do. We are continually looking for and acting on ways to reduce our client’s unemployment insurance costs.
  • We have a customized approach: Whether it be a custom file layout, strategically timed requests for information, or a future request for process improvement, we are uniquely positioned to meet and exceed our client's needs.

  • Our bedrock principles have always put the client at the center of all we do!

FMLA:

We have all seen this happen; we just finish tracking that employee’s FMLA case. Tedious recording of hours, days and weeks and finally when you think you have completed all required documents and tracking to close the case, it happens! You get a new FMLA case on the same employee and the tracking begins all over again!

Join Ed on Friday (1pm-2pm) to learn how to manage these multiple cases.   His session will also include a general overview of the Family Medical Leave Act, special issues with intermittent FMLA leave and employee rights and responsibilities during a job protected leave.

Ed’s years of practice in the labor and employment law matters, both in state and federal courts allows for a broad range of understanding of how these cases relate to the employers world.  His outstanding background has earned him several nominations, including the “ 2016 Lawer of the Year “ by BEST LAWYERS in the fields of Employment Law/Management and Litigation/ Labor & Employment.

Following is provided to us by our TSWB Director of Speakers Sandra Janaik, CPP

Speaker SPOTLIGHT - Bruce E. Buchanan
On any given night, turn on the news and you could hear talk of building walls, sanctuary cities or travel bans.  Immigration and keeping the county safe are hot topics.

Join Bruce on Friday morning (9:10 -10:10 am) to learn how these topics are already impacting our days  with the new I-9 form; immigration compliance – will ICE be more active in their I-9 audits and maybe a return to raids?  Employers need to keep an eye on employment-based visas, especially H-1B and L, that may be changed; and the loss of TN visas if the U.S. withdraws from NAFTA.

Bruce is a founding partner at Sebelist Buchanan Law PLLC where he represents employers and individuals in all aspects of immigration law.  A graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1982, authors his own blog on employer immigration compliance for ilw.com, located at www.employerimmigration.com, and is a regular contributor to HR Professionals Magazine. His book on Immigration Compliance for Employers will be published in 2017.
